One of the most common questions I get is when to schedule a newborn session. “Is my baby too old?” “Is my baby to young?” “Why do we need to do the session when baby is so young?” A lot of photographers will only do a newborn session with baby’s only 2 weeks or younger. There are reasons why we choose specific ages. As a Newport Beach Newborn Photographer, I am more flexible. I’ll explain the reasons behind each age now.
Under two weeks old - Brand new baby’s two weeks or younger, fall asleep much easier than older more alert baby’s. Around two weeks old, they come out of the newborn fog and become much more alert and wide eyed. Around 14 days old, babies also start getting baby acne. We can alway photoshop it out but just another reason by Newborn Photographers love to photograph babies so young. Personally my favorite age is 8-9 days old. For me thats the sweet spot!
Two weeks - six weeks - Babies older than two weeks are still considered a newborn and you should still capture their tininess. Believe me two weeks old is still so little in the grand scheme of things. However with an older baby you’ll get more awake images, we most likely won’t get those sleepy super posed images. If thats something you want, definitely try to schedule for a younger age. On the other hand, if you’re interested in more of a lifestyle session, age won’t really matter. Around six weeks, colic starts to show up if it’s going to so I typically suggest we try to get in before that but even colicky babies can be soothed.
It all just depends on the images you envision. That’s why consultations are key. Even on the phone, I always suggest having a chat with your photographer before booking anything to ensure you’re both on the same page about your goals for the final images.
